SEA CONTAINERS THAMES VIEW

The Brief

Sea Containers London is a luxury design hotel on London's South Bank, combining 1920s cruise-liner influences with contemporary design.

Photograph the hotel's exterior, a river-facing guest room, the restaurant spaces and the rooftop terrace.

The Challenge

Capturing multiple areas of a busy hotel while working around operational requirements and ensuring the exterior photography was completed during the short twilight window.

The Approach

Twilight photography offers only a brief window of ideal light, often lasting no more than 15–20 minutes. To make the most of this time, the shoot was carefully planned in advance.

We began by photographing a river-facing guest room with views of St Paul's Cathedral while there was still sufficient daylight. This allowed us to complete the interior photography before moving to the restaurant spaces and exterior areas later in the evening.

As the restaurants opened and the exterior lighting came to life, we were ready to photograph the hotel during the twilight period, capturing the balance between the warm interior lighting and the evening sky.

When I arrived at the rooftop restaurant, an unexpected private meeting was taking place in the space. To ensure the project could still be completed as planned, we agreed to continue using a long-exposure “ghosting” technique. Multiple exposures were captured from a tripod and later combined in post-production to seamlessly remove movement, resulting in a clean, uninterrupted view of the restaurant interior. As techniques and technology continue to evolve, this type of work will increasingly incorporate AI-based tools to assist in removing transient elements from complex hospitality environments.
